Indonesian Horror Film 'Whispers of Fatimah' - Virtual Production Debut at Cannes (2026)

The world of cinema is about to get a chilling Indonesian twist, and it's not just any ordinary horror film we're talking about here. "Bisikan Desa Gringsing: Whispers of Fatimah" is set to make its international debut at the Cannes Film Market, marking a significant milestone for Indonesian cinema and virtual production technology.

This mysterious horror film, directed by Ivander Tedjasukmana, is a collaborative effort between Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, bringing together a diverse range of talents. The story follows Hesti, played by Aghniny Haque, on a quest to find her missing father, a journey that leads her to the haunted Desa Gringsing village and an encounter with the terrifying spirit of Fatimah, portrayed by Fatmah Nahdi.

What makes this film particularly fascinating is its use of virtual production technology. The production team utilized OMG Studios' LED volumetric stage, creating photorealistic environments in real-time to enhance the storytelling. This innovative approach has garnered support from various government bodies, including Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority and Malaysia's Studios Film Office.

"Virtual production is more than just a technological advancement; it's a new creative avenue for Southeast Asian storytelling," says Nick GC Tan, CEO of OMG Studios. "We're thrilled to be at the forefront of this movement in Indonesian cinema."

The film's producer, Manoj Samtani from Mandela Pictures, expressed gratitude for the collaboration and hopes that the spirit of unity behind the project will resonate with audiences. Mandela Pictures is handling world sales and has already scheduled theatrical releases in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, and Azerbaijan later this year.

This project is not just a standalone film but also the first title from BN13, Mandela Pictures' new label dedicated to Indonesian horror and folklore IP. It was previously unveiled at the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival Market and Asia TV Forum, solidifying its place in the international film scene.

In my opinion, "Bisikan Desa Gringsing" represents a significant step forward for Indonesian cinema, showcasing the country's talent and creativity on a global stage. It's a testament to the power of collaboration and the potential of virtual production to enhance storytelling. I can't wait to see how this film captivates audiences and sparks a new wave of interest in Indonesian horror.
